CHAPTER 14

The night before they were all supposed to go to Denver for mini-golf, Wade, Lydia, and Levi went over to Holly’s house for a sleepover. This was for a number of reasons. For one, it was a known fact that Levi and Lydia tended to sleep in pretty late. By all of them staying at Holly’s house, she and Wade could wake them up before it was time to go. There would be no sleeping through the alarm excuses allowed.

Secondly, they wanted to get to Denver and have enough time to go shopping and get lunch before they went to play mini-golf. Since everyone wanted to go to their own set of stores, it was safe to say they’d need a lot of time to hit each one. Third, they wanted a good parking spot at the mini-golf place. Since it was the first night it would be open, they figured they’d have to get there early. And lastly, sleepovers were fun. Any excuse was enough to have one, and they were just lucky that they had three reasons why sleeping in the same house was a good idea.

“Haven’t we talked about this before?” Levi complained. “The official Uno rules state that you cannot play a plus four on top of a plus four.”

Lydia raised her eyebrows at him. “It doesn’t matter what Uno says. The internet as a whole decided to ignore that and keep playing the more fun way. Now get over yourself and draw eight cards.”

Levi scowled and collected his extra cards, spreading them throughout his hand. “This isn’t fair. I’ll sue you over this.”

Lydia laughed. “Not only would you lose this game, then, you’d also lose that court case.”

Levi wasn’t finished arguing. “I’m going to steal your first born and raise him as a troll under a bridge. I’ll tell him you tried to kill him, and whenever you try to cross his bridge, he’ll give you riddles with no answer so you can never go by.”

Everyone blinked. “That was… scarily thought out,” Holly mumbled.

“What if I have a girl?” Lydia challenged. “Same scenario?”

“If it’s a girl I’ll let you keep her. Women are far too dramatic for my tastes.”

“But?”

“But I’ll supply her with cigarettes and alcohol so all your mom’s friends will think you’re a failure when your child winds up in jail at fourteen years old.”

Lydia nodded once, as if she was accepting this fate. “Fair enough. Can’t wait to watch my kids grow up to be just as big of losers as their Uncle Levi.”

By the time they’d finished arguing, Holly, Wade, Brigid, and Linc had all taken their turns again. Two more plus fours had been placed. Lydia looked down at the pile, grinned, and dropped another.

“I hate you all!” Levi screeched, drawing twelve more cards. “Each and every one of you gets a chain-smoking troll child.”

“Even us?” Brigid asked, gesturing between her and Linc.

“Yeah!” Holly said, crossing her arms. “That’s me you’re talking about!”

Levi narrowed his eyes on them, then smiled with sugary sweetness.
